There's no wrong time to move to Australia. But there are smarter times — and knowing the difference can save you money, reduce stress, and make your arrival feel a lot more settled. Here's what you need to know before you pick your date.
Peak Season — What It Means for Your Move
Like most things in life, moving has a busy season. In the trans-Tasman removals world, peak periods typically fall around:
- January and February — the post-Christmas rush, school year transitions, and new job start dates drive high demand
- June and July — mid-year job moves and the end of financial year create a second surge
- November and December — the pre-Christmas rush combined with holiday slowdowns on both sides of the Tasman creates a perfect storm of high demand and reduced capacity
During these periods, shipping containers fill up faster, port congestion increases, and transit times can stretch beyond the usual four to six weeks. It's also when pricing is at its highest — demand goes up, and so do costs.
If you have flexibility in your timeline, moving outside these windows is the smarter financial choice.
Off-Peak — The Sweet Spot
The quieter months — broadly March through May and August through October — offer the best combination of container availability, competitive pricing, and predictable transit times.
If you're not locked into a specific start date for work or school, this is when we'd recommend moving. You'll have more flexibility on your collection date, your shipment is more likely to sail on the next available vessel, and the whole process tends to move more smoothly. Off-peak also means our team has more capacity to give your move the attention it deserves.
Moving with a Family — The School Year Is Your Guide
If you have school-age children, the Australian school calendar should anchor your timeline. The Australian school year starts in late January or early February depending on the state — earlier than New Zealand's February start.
The sweet spot for families is an October move. This gives you time to arrive, settle into your new home, get the kids enrolled, and find your feet before the school year begins — without falling into the November-December peak season rush. December — Plan Extra Time
If December is your only option, it's absolutely doable — but it requires careful planning. The holiday slowdown affects ports, customs processing, and delivery services on both sides of the Tasman. Business closures in late December can add unexpected delays to your shipment's clearance and delivery. Build extra buffer time into your expectations and book as early as possible.
The Golden Rule — Book at Least Four Weeks Out
Whatever month you choose, we recommend booking with Easy as™ at least four weeks before your preferred collection date. During peak season, booking earlier gives you the best chance of securing your preferred date and container space.
The earlier you lock in your move, the more control you have over your timeline — and the more likely you are to avoid the stress that comes with last-minute bookings during busy periods.
